Prevention is Better
Most visa refusals are preventable. The common thread? Rushing the application or not understanding the requirements. Take your time and double-check everything.
Financial Mistakes
❌ Insufficient 28-Day Holding Period
Submitting your application before funds have been held for 28 consecutive days. Even one day short = automatic refusal.
Fix: Calculate backwards from your application date. If applying on June 15, funds must be in account since at least May 18 (28 days before). Set a calendar reminder.
❌ Using Fintech Apps for POF
Submitting bank statements from Grey, Wise, Chipper, or other fintech apps. These are NOT accepted by UKVI.
Fix: Use only regulated Nigerian banks - GTBank, Access, Zenith, UBA, First Bank, etc. Transfer funds to a traditional bank account before starting your 28-day period.
❌ Not Adding Exchange Rate Buffer
Calculating POF exactly to the penny, then exchange rate moves against you. Your GBP equivalent drops below requirement.
Fix: Add 10-15% buffer to your calculated amount. UKVI uses OANDA rates on application day - rates can move significantly.
❌ Missing Birth Certificate with Parent's Funds
Using parent's bank account for POF but not providing birth certificate showing the relationship.
Fix: Always include your birth certificate showing parents' names, plus a consent letter from the parent whose account you're using.
Document Mistakes
❌ Expired TB Certificate
TB test is valid for 6 months from X-ray date. If your visa processing takes longer than expected, it can expire.
Fix: Get TB test 3-4 months before application. This gives you buffer time. Don't get it 6 months early.
❌ Low-Quality Document Scans
Uploading blurry photos or unreadable scans. Case officers can't read the documents.
Fix: Scan at 300 DPI minimum. Use CamScanner or similar with good lighting. Check every page is readable before uploading.
❌ Not Declaring Previous Refusals
Failing to mention previous visa refusals (UK or other countries). UKVI can see your history - dishonesty leads to bans.
Fix: Declare ALL previous refusals honestly. Include refusal letters if you have them. Explain what's changed since. Honesty > trying to hide.
Application Mistakes
❌ Confusing Application Date vs Biometrics Date
Thinking the 28-day POF period relates to your biometrics appointment. It relates to your online submission date.
Fix: Your "application date" is when you click submit online - NOT when you attend VFS. The 28-day period must end within 31 days of that online submission date.
❌ Using an Agent Who Submits False Information
Agent submits fake documents or false information. YOU are legally responsible, even if you didn't know. This can result in a 10-year ban.
Fix: Review EVERYTHING an agent submits on your behalf. Get copies of all uploaded documents. If something is wrong, contact UKVI immediately to correct it.
❌ Not Explaining Employment/Study Gaps
Having unexplained gaps between graduating and now applying. UKVI may question your genuine student intent.
Fix: Explain gaps proactively. NYSC service, self-employment, family responsibilities, health issues - document whatever applies. Include NYSC certificate, business registration, etc.
What If Your Visa Is Refused?
A refusal is not the end. Here's what you can do:
1. Understand the Reason
Read your refusal letter carefully. It will explain exactly why you were refused and what evidence was lacking.
2. Administrative Review (£80)
If you believe UKVI made an error in assessing your application, you can request an administrative review within 28 days. You get the fee back if they overturn the decision.
3. Reapply with a Fresh Application
There's no limit to how many times you can apply. You'll need:
- A new CAS from your university
- Fresh bank statements (new 28-day period)
- Address the specific issues mentioned in the refusal
4. Contact Your University
Let your university know immediately. They may be able to defer your start date or provide additional documentation to support a new application.
Success After Refusal
Many applicants with previous refusals have been approved on subsequent applications. The key is addressing the specific concerns raised and providing comprehensive documentation.
